New Harmony Path & Trail System
On reaching the river, the trail goes both left and right. To the left, during dry months, one can go down to a sandbar and get a great view of the bridge. To the right, the trail follows the Wabash for a long way, with side trails going back up to the Roofless Church or Our Lord’s Woods. It’s not unusual to see a bald eagle perched high in a tree along the river.
Eventually, the gravel trail comes out at Third and North Streets. From there, one can turn right and quickly be back at the center of town, or choose to make a large circle around town by continuing up Third Street and catching another paved trail next to the old New Harmony School. That one winds around the school along a scenic wooded ridge and ends by Murphy Park. One can continue through the park to Main Street, walk a short ways to the left and go to the Harmonist Labyrinth, or hang right and head back to downtown.
Whichever way you choose to go, you won’t have to walk far to find a host of historic sites or interesting businesses.
