This is a relaxed environment, and all ability levels are welcome! We will set up in Maclure Square, across the street from the gallery. (If raining, the location will be moved inside to the Atheneum.) Participants will receive basic drawing instructions, compose a landscape scene, and learn the basics of painting with watercolor.
Participants will be provided with watercolor paper. Participants will be responsible for bringing their own non-mechanical pencils, erasers, watercolor paint, and brushes. This can range from a simple compressed watercolor palette to a variety of watercolor tube paints.
Suggested Materials
Watercolor tubes or pan sets:
Some economical brands include Windsor Newton Cotman Watercolor Tubes and sets, Master’s Touch Paint tubes or pans sets, Yasutomo Niji Aquarelle Matte Watercolor set or any other easy portable set. Some sets come with more colors, and that is ok.
Have a variety of 6-12 colors that include/similar to:
Lemon Yellow Hue or Cadmium Yellow Light or Aureoin Yellow
Cadmium Red Light/Medium Hue or Vermillion
Cerulean Blue Hue
Ultramarine Blue
Phthalo Blue or Phthalo Green (optional)
Alizarin Crimson
Permanent Rose
Dioxazine Purple (optional)
Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber
Lamp Black
Chinese white (optional)
If your paint set doesn’t come with a mixing tray or mixing tin lid, a plain white plate is just fine, small butcher tray, or small plastic mixing tray. I tend to like mixing trays with open space to mix color.
Watercolor Brushes:
Brands vary and the market is vast for brushes, just like paint. Some quality economical brands include Simply Simmons, Royal and Langnickel soft-grip, Princeton. There are many sets out there with a variety of brushes available as well.
¾ inch Flat Brush or similar size
#5 Round or similar size
#6 filbert or flat
Mop brush
Other Optional Items:
Natural sponge
Cotton swabs/q-tips
Ruler
Masking fluid
*Basic watercolor paper, paper towels, jars for water will be provided
