Mount Vernon has always been a river town. Going down to the waterfront and watching the boats go by in the evening has long been a popular pastime for its citizens. Now, with new additions and renovations, it’s become one of the better spots to enjoy the scenic Ohio River.
In recent years, the waterfront has undergone a dramatic renovation. Old buildings have been demolished and replaced with a residential/commercial hub and Riverbend Park, a vibrant new public space that sits adjacent to the old Sherburne Park, which has been recently renovated with new picnic tables, benches and playground equipment.
The new park’s centerpiece is its amphitheater, which hosts civic events, an annual arts festival, concerts, movies, weddings, and the annual Fourth of July fireworks display, among other happenings throughout the year.
Riverbend is also something of small scale botanic garden, featuring beautiful landscaping, walkways, benches and a short trail. And there’s a splash fountain for children to frolic in during the summer months.
The Sherburne Park Bandshell was considered the heart of the town for most of its existence, and the playground there a favorite of local children since the park was built in 1912. Now, the bandshell houses a picnic table, and children enjoy the new playground equipment just as their grandparents enjoyed the old.
Several fine restaurants, clubs and a coffee shop are located within blocks of the parks, making the Mount Vernon waterfront a worthy destination during your stay in Posey County.
The Riverbend Park Amphitheater is available for just about any event. With the best view of the Ohio River, it’s a great place for a wedding or large get together. There is no cost for the space, but a small fee is required for insurance.
